The Reed Fish, also known as the Rope Fish or Snake Fish, is a fascinating, eel-like freshwater species that brings prehistoric charm and graceful movement to any large tropical aquarium. With its long, slender body, smooth motion, and peaceful nature, it’s a favourite among oddball fish keepers.

  • Scientific Name: Erpetoichthys calabaricus

  • Common Names: Rope Fish, Snake Fish, Reed Fish

  • Grows up to 35–50 cm (14–20 inches)

  • Peaceful and sociable – can be kept in groups

  • Temperature: 24–28Β°C (75–82Β°F)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Minimum tank size: 200 litres (for adult specimens)

  • Prefers a low-lit, well-decorated tank with hiding spots

  • Escape artist – tight-fitting lid is essential


🍽 Diet:

Reed Fish are carnivorous and require a protein-rich diet:

  • Frozen or live foods: bloodworms, blackworms, earthworms, small fish

  • Sinking carnivore pellets

  • May ignore flakes or small floating food

🧠 Tip: Feed in the evening or after lights out for best results.


🀝 Tank Mates:

Reed Fish are peaceful but may eat very small fish. Best tank mates include:

  • Large, peaceful fish: severums, angels, gouramis

  • Bottom dwellers: loaches, large plecos, bichirs

  • Avoid fin-nippers or highly aggressive species

  • Keep 2+ for natural social behaviour
