The Red Claw Crayfish (Cherax quadricarinatus) is a large, eye-catching freshwater species native to Queensland, Australia. It features a beautiful blue to green-blue body with distinctive red patches on the claws — making it one of the most striking and sought-after crayfish in the hobby.

Highly adaptable and relatively peaceful compared to other crayfish, Red Claws can be housed in larger aquariums with care. They're intelligent, curious, and thrive in a well-structured tank with hiding spaces and room to explore.

Care Info:

  • Size: Up to 20–25cm

  • Temperature: 22–28°C

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • Tank Size: 120L+ per adult

  • Diet: Omnivore – algae wafers, sinking pellets, vegetables, meaty foods

  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive (less so than other crayfish)

  • Lifespan: 4–6 years

Red Claws are known for their fast growth and impressive size. Though generally calmer than other crayfish, they may still nip slow or bottom-dwelling fish, so ideal tank mates should be chosen carefully — or kept in a species-only setup.
